Cataract Awareness Month
What is a Cataract ?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. This can make your vision blurry, dull, or hazy, as if you are looking through a foggy window.
Cataracts are very common, especially as we get older. They usually develop slowly and can affect one or both eyes.
Can Cataract be prevented?
While cataracts cannot always be prevented, you can help protect your eye health by:
Wearing sunglasses that block UV rays
Not smoking
Managing medical conditions such as diabetes
Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables
Having regular eye examinations
How are Cataracts treated?
If your cataract is affecting your day-to-day life (for example, driving, reading or cooking), and your vision cannot be improved enough be changing your glasses, you can ask your optometrist to refer you to an ophthalmologist for surgery. This is the only proven treatment for cataracts. During surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens.
When should you have an Eye Examination?
Schedule an eye examination if you experience:
Changes in your vision
Difficulty with night driving
Increased glare from lights
Trouble reading or performing daily activities
Early detection and regular eye care can help maintain healthy vision and improve quality of life.
This Cataract Awareness Month, take a moment to prioritize your eye health. If you have concerns about your vision, contact us to arrange an eye examination.
